To visit the village of Ahenny is to step back in time!

The village consists of just two streets, bordered by stone houses that were once homes to the workers from the neighbouring Ormonde and Victoria slate quarries.

In past times these quarries provided the main source of employment for the area.  They are no longer in use today.

The contrast between the adjacent slate and water, existing in the quarry must be seen to be believed.

Another attraction in Ahenny are the two stone crosses, which were built by monks who lived in a monastery next to the graveyard.

These crosses are over 1000 years old, yet they stand close to relatively new burial sites.  The old and the new intertwined.

These two sandstone crosses belong to the Ossory group of crosses and are believed to be the oldest in Ireland.
