Duiske Abbey is situated in the heart of the picturesque town of Graiguenamanagh in Co. Kilkenny.  It’s believed that the Abbey takes it’s name from the Duiske or Black Water that cascades from Brandon Hill into the river Barrow.
Duiske Abbey is a fully restored Cistercian church that was founded in 1204 by William Marshall. Duiske is the daughter house of Stanley which is situated in Wiltshire.  As with a large percentage of monastic sites in Ireland the Abbey was dissolved in 1536 by Henry viii. Within the church some of the original tiles are on display.  To the south of the church stand two high crosses dating to the 8th century.

The mill story is woven from two strands.  After arriving in Graiguenamanagh in 1204, the Cistercian monks discovered the purity of water flowing in the Duiske river and built a monastery and mill nearby.  Through the export of wool, their monastery prospered and became their largest Irish foundation, Duiske Abbey.

The second strand began with the arrival of Flemish weavers in the area in the 1600’s.  In the 1800’s one of their descendants, Mr. Cushen, established himself as a woolen manufacturer, opening a mill in the town.  This was the beginning of the story about Cushendale Mills but to see, first hand, the beautiful craftsmanship in their products, makes a visit is essential.

Duiske Glass studio and Factory Shop is located in the heart of Graiguenamanagh. When the factory was established in the 1970’s the craftsmen revived the traditional intaglio method of engraving.  A piece of this glass would be the ideal present for anyone.
