The
mill story is woven from two strands. After
arriving in Graiguenamanagh in 1204, the Cistercian monks discovered the purity
of water flowing in the Duiske river and built a monastery and mill nearby. Through the export of wool, their monastery prospered and became their
largest Irish foundation, Duiske Abbey.
The
second strand began with the arrival of Flemish weavers in the area in the
1600’s. In the 1800’s one of
their descendants, Mr. Cushen, established himself as a woolen manufacturer,
opening a mill in the town. This
was the beginning of the story about Cushendale Mills but to see, first hand,
the beautiful craftsmanship in their products, makes a visit is essential.
