Kells Augustinian Priory stands on the banks of the Kings River close to the village of Kells in Co. Kilkenny. The priory is situated on the site of a church which, in times gone by, was where the locals congregated for mass. Today this impressive ruin comprises of mediaeval towers strategically placed within the walls and protect the land within.
The priory was founded in 1193 by Geoffrey Fitzherbert who was brother-in-law to Strongbow.
However in 1540 this site was dissolved by Henry Vlll and the property was handed over to James, the 9th Earl of Ormond. In the 17th century the arrival of Cromwell led to further land divisions at Kells.
